The small township of Bulwer on Moreton Island is just 20 minutes drive north from the MICAT landing point. A 4WD is a necessity as there are no bitumen roads anywhere on the island.
Bulwer is home to the popular Castaways Cafe & Store, a convenience store with holiday essentials such as bread, milk, fuel, cold drinks, and ice creams. Breakfast, lunch and dinner (peak times) is served at the restaurant on site. Water sport gear can also be hired here.
The Bulwer Wrecks directly in front of the township have a surprising amount of marine life and are a great spot for safe family snorkelling. There are three ships at the wrecks that were originally scuttled in the 1930's to form a breakwater, a harbour for small boats, however as the boats are now rusty they provide the perfect aquatic area for fish.
Bulwer's most popular fishing spot, Comboyuro Point, is 2km north of town just where the shoreline curves, however, fishing can take place all along Bulwer Beach.
Bulwer is based at the entrance to the roads to access the northern part of Moreton Island to places such as:
- The Cape Moreton Lighthouse, atop a rocky promontory near North Point and great spot to watch whales migrate past
- Blue Lagoon, a hidden gem of 42 hectares of fresh water filled by an underground water table
- Champagne Pools, a natural sandy bottomed sea bubble bath located on the north-eastern tip of the island
